ELECTROSURGERY

WHAT IS ELECTROSURGERY?
Electrosurgery refers to all the different procedures performed using electrically generated heat.

WHAT IS ELECTROFULGRATION?
Electrofulguration procedure involves charring of superficial tissue caused by sparks from the electrode, without actually touching the tissue. The charred tissue protects deeper tissue from further heat effects by blocking the spark.

WHAT IS THE ELECTROFULGRATION TREATMENT PROCESS?
A local anaesthetic cream may be applied for smaller lesions/ or local anaesthetic injection may be required for large lesions. After cleaning the lesion, with a low power setting, the electrode is placed at a small distance from the lesion [or] the electrode is kept in contact with the lesion, depending upon the method used. Current is given for a short burst of 2 to 3 seconds. The lesion shrivels up and lightens in colour, with formation of superficial scab. Scabs formed should never be removed, but allowed to fall off spontaneously.

WHAT ARE THE INDICATIONS FOR ELECTROFULGRATION [CONDITIONS IN WHICH ELECTROFULGRATION IS USEFUL]?
Electrofulgration treatment is used to treat various skin conditions, such as:

  • Warts [verruca vulgaris, verruca plana, filiform warts etc.]
  • Acrochordons [skin tags]
  • Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra [DPN]
  • Milia
  • Molluscum Contagiosum
  • Freckles
  • Senile Lentigines
  • Small Epidermal Nevi
  • Seborrheic Keratoses
  • Vascular Lesions e.g. Telangiectasiae, Spider Angiomas, Cherry Angiomas, Small Hemangiomas, Venous Lakes, Angiofibromas, Pyogenic Granulomas etc.]
  • Syringomas
  • Trichoepitheliomas
  • Xanthelasmas
  • Xanthomas
  • Fox Fordyce Spots
  • Sebaceous Gland Hyperplasia
The fulguration procedure for warts, fulguration procedure for dermatosis papulosa nigra treatment, and fulguration treatment for skin tags are other treatments available with the clinic.

WHAT IS THE POST-PROCEDURE CARE FOR ELECTROFULGRATION TREATMENT [ELECTROSURGERY]?
Topical antibiotic cream may be applied for 5 to 7 days. Oral antibiotics may be required for larger lesions. Scales should not be forcibly removed and allowed to fall off spontaneously.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ELECTROSURGERY?
Electrofulgration/desiccation is a simple office procedure. There is minimal/no bleeding. Healing is fast with minimal scarring if the lesion is superficial. Electrofulguration treatmentfor skin tags is the easiest treatment option for some people who suffer from aging related conditions.
