BOTULINUM TOXIN - A (BOTOX)
INTRODUCTION: Creases or lines on the face can be caused due to aging, gravity, positional pressure [during sleep], smoking, harsh weather, actinic damage [photo aging] and from repeated muscle contractions as occurs with facial expressions [dynamic lines/rhytides]. These dynamic facial lines gradually change to static lines on the face even at rest. These lines are regarded as a sign of aging and can have a negative impact on the self-esteem of an individual.
BOTULINUM TOXIN [BTX] helps in combating cutaneous signs of aging [e.g. wrinkles, frown lines, neck bands etc.] through cosmetic denervation.
WHAT IS BOTULINUM TOXIN [BTX] POPULARLY REFERRED TO AS BOTOX?
BTX is a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyses striated muscles by blocking the release of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junction. Ease of administration, negligible side effects, and good results has enabled Botox to carve a niche for itself in the field of cosmetic dermatology.
WHAT IS THE BOTOX TREATMENT PROCEDURE?
Botulinum toxin - A is available as a freeze dried powder in a glass vial. Botox treatment procedure beings with reconstituting the freeze dried powder with normal saline. Treatment area is cleaned with spirit. Ice pack / local anaesthetic cream is applied in overanxious patients. Injection is given in sitting position. Injection sites are marked as per treatment area, after asking the patient to smile/frown to best demonstrate the site of wrinkles.
WHAT ARE THE POST BOTULINUM TOXIN [BOTOX] INJECTION INSTRUCTIONS?
WHAT ARE THE INDICATIONS FOR BOTULINUM TOXIN-A TREATMENT [CONDITIONS IN WHICH BOTOX IS USEFUL]?

Mesobotox is the latest advanced technique for cosmetic application of Botulinum toxin-A. After diluting the botulinum toxin-A vial with normal saline, the solution is injected at random into the facial skin (intradermal, not intramuscular]. Either only the required areas or the entire face from hairline to jaw line is treated. Mesobotox is used for fine lines or mild sagging, not related to any particular muscle group.
Advantages of Mesobotox:
There is immediate tightening of facial skin with ironing out of very fine lines, giving the skin a healthy glow. This method is cost effective as only a few units of botulinum toxin are used. Mesobotox is very popular among youngsters, artists etc.
